Au pairs ยท Cape Town
Find an au pair in Cape Town
School runs, extra-murals, homework and holidays. KhayaKin helps you find an au pair close to home, starting in the Southern Peninsula.
What an au pair does
In South Africa an au pair is usually someone who helps with school-age children in the afternoons: fetching them from school, driving to sport and activities, supervising homework and making a snack or supper. Many also work full days in the school holidays.
What to look for
- A valid driver's licence and a clean driving record, and clarity about whose car is used and who insures it.
- The grades they can help with, and their stronger subjects.
- Swimming ability, if your children swim or you have a pool.
- First aid.
- Afternoons that match your school timetable, including holidays.
On KhayaKin you can filter for a driver's licence and own car, and profiles show which grades an au pair can help with.
Driving in the far south
School runs between Fish Hoek, Sun Valley, Noordhoek and Kommetjie are short on the map but slow at the wrong time of day. An au pair who already lives in the valley knows the roads and is not relying on getting over the mountain first.
Employing legally
When you hire an au pair to work in your home, you are an employer in the eyes of the law. That means a written contract, at least the national minimum wage, a payslip, UIF if they work more than 24 hours a month, and registration with the Compensation Fund. Our employer checklist walks through each step, and the employment contract template is free to use.
How KhayaKin helps
- Every carer's South African ID, or passport and work permit, is reviewed by our team before their profile is listed.
- Profiles show experience, previous jobs, languages, rates and what each person is comfortable with, and many include a short intro video.
- You can search by distance from your home, which matters in the Southern Peninsula.
- You message and arrange an interview in the app, and phone numbers are only shared once the carer accepts.
We still recommend that you interview carefully, phone references yourself and do a paid trial before you commit. Our interview questions and reference check sheet can help.
