Domestic workers ยท Cape Town
Find a domestic worker in Cape Town
Whether you need help one morning a week or every day, KhayaKin helps you find a domestic worker close to home, starting in the Southern Peninsula.
What a domestic worker does
A domestic worker keeps your home running: general cleaning, bathrooms and kitchens, laundry and ironing, and sometimes cooking or shopping. Many also help with children or an elderly family member. Agree the list of tasks, and how often each is done, before the first day.
What to look for
- The tasks she is happy to do. Ironing, deep cleaning, windows and cooking are not a given.
- Experience with a home like yours. A two-bedroom flat and a five-bedroom house are different jobs.
- Comfort with your appliances and your pets.
- References you can phone.
- Days that match. Many domestic workers work for several households, so check which days are free.
On KhayaKin, profiles list the tasks each person does, the appliances they use confidently, and the days they are available.
Part-time and several employers
Many households share a domestic worker with others. The law still applies to each employer separately: if she works for you for more than 24 hours a month, you register her for UIF yourself, even if another household does too.
Employing legally
When you hire a domestic worker to work in your home, you are an employer in the eyes of the law. That means a written contract, at least the national minimum wage, a payslip, UIF if they work more than 24 hours a month, and registration with the Compensation Fund. Our employer checklist walks through each step, and the employment contract template is free to use.
How KhayaKin helps
- Every carer's South African ID, or passport and work permit, is reviewed by our team before their profile is listed.
- Profiles show experience, previous jobs, languages, rates and what each person is comfortable with, and many include a short intro video.
- You can search by distance from your home, which matters in the Southern Peninsula.
- You message and arrange an interview in the app, and phone numbers are only shared once the carer accepts.
We still recommend that you interview carefully, phone references yourself and do a paid trial before you commit. Our interview questions and reference check sheet can help.
